ACD Pro Shared On Network

    Ok - I am not trying ot beat a dead horse here - I know there is much about this subject in the forums as I have been reading them all over the last few days.

    I understand the ACDSee doesn't support network installations. But I gather form reading the forums that is can be done with some level of sucess.

    So - I guess my question is what is the best way to do it? Or at least best for my situation.

    I have approximately 18,000 images on a shared network drive that need to be shared by 2 PCs on the network.

    All of the images can be cataloged at a single workstation - so the 2nd workstation only needs the abaility to filter, view, print and sometimes edit the images.

    I do not mind purchasing an additonal copy of ACDSee Pro if that is the answer.

    I just want to set it up the most stable way.

    Thanks!

    First, the ACDSee license allows installation on two computers. I think the wording says a desktop and a laptop, but hey, if you've got two laptops, put one on your desk for a moment while installation, or if two desktops, put on one your lap while installing :-)

    In your setting, I know what *I* would do: I would enter all info on the first workstation as you normally do, then run Batch Set Information to copy all database info to IPTC fields in the images themselves. Then simply running Database->Catalog Files on the second machine will cause it to read it all that information and make it searchable. If you are mainly concerned with keywords and captions, this is good enough. If you really need to duplicate the whole structure of the db on the first machine - ratings & categories in particular - then you could run Batch Set Information on the second machine to copy the IPTC info back to the database. It doesn't work perfect with categories if you have multiple categories with the same name (underneath different parents) but it is better than nothing.

    I have templates set up in Batch Set Information to do this copying for me. Unfortunately, templates are not saved as files so I can't simply post them, but read the help on the dialog, paying attention to the Insert Metadata button, and hopefully you can figure it out. You've got some leeway in choosing which database fields get stored to which IPTC fields, but I use

    Caption -> Caption
    Notes -> Headline
    Keywords -> Keywords
    Rating -> Urgency
    Categories -> Supplemental Categories

    Has anything change in ACDSee Pro (2.5 or below) that make this process easier? I'd imagine there are many people that access their photos from different computers.

    The embedded metadat feature gives you another way of sharing metadata, but it still more or less depends on you manage the synchroniztion so two people do not clobber each other's work.  it works great if you can lvie with the idea of a server machine on which data is modified and clients on which it is only viewed.

    Thanks Marc.

    Could you describe in a bit more detail how you should manage that synchronization process?

    I'm confused because on another thread ( http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/how-to-share-categorization-data ) Heidi stated that once an image is in the database, if you change alter the metadata and embed again, those changes won't be picked up because whats already in the database overrides the changed metadata.

    Unfortunately, I have no insight into that.  First thing that comes to mind is to use a physical object as a key - tell everyone involved they have to be holding the object to be able to make changes.

    I've never gone that far, so I can't say.  But if this is true, it seems you could still work around it by starting over with a new database and cataloging everything every time you want to import new info.  Maybe that could be something run every night?
