8.1.98 Upgrade Woes

After an intial seemingly successful update with a complete database conversion I then found that all My database items were described as on an unmounted drive with no thumbnails?!?!

After a complete uninstall and reinstall of a bare 8.0 and then a restore of my database from that version I then went the upgrade path again. All seemed well until I started the app and then it reports that it cannot connect to the database despite the database being Exactly where it is supposed to be!?

I managed to get the app to start to editing the registry and telling it that the database was in a new foldr to which it responded by creating a brnd new database.

I then tried to convert the database used by v.8.0 again and the problem appears to be somewhere in the Database drive mapping options:

I have 2 physical HDD's

HDD 1 has two partitions C & D
HDD 2 has one partition only called E - all my photographs are on this partition.

The database drive mapping partitions lists C & D as input drives but not E? Instead it lists a drive called K - which on my system is actually one of my card reader drives?!?! therefore it seems that it cannot find My most important drive right from the outset?

Every variant at this point brings in a "successful" database conversion but always with the end result that all my database thumbs and file references are on an unmounted drive!

Oh and all folder exclusions are totally forgotten to boot also!

Conclusion?

this update is totally FUBAR and I do not recommend it be installed to anyone at the present time until these bugs are sorted..

So, on the Database drive mapping dialogue, there is no choice for E:?

What happens if you update without any other USB flash drives or card readers connected? (disconnect all other removable drives and keep C:, D:, and E: only)

Try to do database optimization in 8.0 first and perform the above action.

For file exclusion, did you exclude any file under My Document?

With my setup everything is set to be excluded except my photographs folder on E drive which contains 50K+ images. It's worked that way for nearly a year now without a fault or even breaking into a sweat with the old version and it shouldn't pose a problem with the upgrade </forums.acdsystems.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I just updated, and I'm having startup problems too. On my laptop I have two partitions. If I access any images on my "C" drive, there's no problem. However, if I access images on my "E" drive, the program hangs for about 30-45 seconds. During this time all folders in "E" drive have a "+" by them. When the program frees-up, the "+'s" disappear and the program works without problem.

If I quit the program and start again (even without rebooting) the exact thing happens again. This was not an issue until the update.

Same here: the thumbnails have gone and if you move the mouse over the thumbnails
the properties pop up telling:

Filename: So-and-So.jpg
File Location: <Unmounted [10]>\Photos\..etc.

More than 90% of my thumbnails have gone, great!!
Converting the database did not help either...

My guess is that after install, ACDSee is launched and uses the database that it has
created during install (by default on C-partition) or ACDSee does not 'see' the other
partition or drive where the photos are stored and does not link the exisiting photos
to the database.
In my case, the photos are stored on a drive that should be mounted before use.

rgds,

I had the same issues. You mentioned that the drive(s) should be mounted before use.

How do you go about doing that.

Thanks,

Regret I am afraid there is no solution of the timebeing. One has to go back to a
previous version (in my case 8.39 std and restore a backup).

All the work I already did in 8.1 (batch set info on many photos), simply has become
useless, nor can i work with 8.1, nor is there a solution for the problem...

Great!

One seems to be working on a solution.
ACDSee 8 Pro seems to working with serial numbers for a drive as reference number
thus to support USB drives and devices. Timebeing those of use encountering problems
shd go back to 8.39 std and wait for a solution. Hope it will come soon.

Hi,

A drive mounting issue is usually caused when the Volume Serial Number on the drive or partition is 0000-0000. The ACDSee database links asset information, such as Captions, Categories, Keywords, Author and Notes, to a unique identifier that consists of the volume serial number + filepath + filename.

To address this issue, the drive (or partition) must be assigned a non-zero serial number and Database Maintenance | Change Binding used to reassociate the image folder to the database asset information. Try the following procedure to address this:

To check the volume serial number:

- Open a Command Window by clicking Start | Run and typing CMD in the Open box.
- At the prompt type dir [drive_letter]:, i.e. dir C:
- Scroll to the top of the Window and view the current Volume Serial Number setting.
- If this is set to 0000-0000 proceed to the Step 2, otherwise proceed to Change Binding Step ## below.

To change the volume serial number:
- Download VolumeID from SysInternals.com (http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/VolumeId.zip)
- Ensure the utility "VolumeID.exe" is located on the drive whose serial number is to be changed, otherwise you will receive a permissions error message.
- Open a Command Window by clicking Start | Run and type CMD in the Open box.
- Change to the drive whose serial number is to be changed. For example, enter F: to change to the 'F' drive.
- Assuming VolumeID.exe is located in the root directory of drive F:

Enter VolumeID F: 1234-5678 or any other unique 2-segment 8 digit code. (Usage: volumeid xxxx-xxxx)

- Reboot your computer for Windows to implement the changes.

In addition, there is a feature in ACDSee 8 and Pro called 'Change Binding' that relinks the image asset information to the image. This is useful when the pathname reference to an image changes (i.e. import of the database from another installation and where the image files are local to that machine). Basically 'Change Binding' changes all location references for the selected orphaned folder to another folder, and retains all database information. You will find this icon located in the bottom right corner of the database maintenance menu. Upon browsing to a folder where asset information is not correctly linked, the 'Change BInding' icon will become selectable.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ken.

Hi,

Does your drive or partition have volume serial number of zeros (0000-0000)? That may be the source of the problems. Look at Ken's posting ("To check the volume serial number") to check it.

Same problems for me... 50.000 pics ...

Is it possible to fix the problem without using a previous backup?

Hi Ken,

I have checked the numbers of my - logical - hard drives and both seem to have no 0000 in them, but unique 8 letter-digit numbers.

I am having the same problem with my database and only was able to restore my database by downgrading to 8.0. The binding option is greyed out in my acdsee, so I can't try that? Also, am I supposed to do that before or after upgrading the software?

However, the path of my pictures didn't change at all, they are save at logicial drive D: where they have allways been.

The software used to be on C:, now tried installing on D:, than upgrading, doesn't help.
The database care option also shows a mysterioius X drive - never heart of that one, it doesn't exist anywhere else and according to database care it's totally empty.

If anyone has any ideas, greatly appreciated.

You may know this already but did you wait? It takes ages for the binding to un-grey and I mean ages.

It tooks more than 3 hours to repair DB...

I hope they'll fix these problem ASAP.

I'm looking for another solution for catalog.

I HATE TO DO SAME THING TWICE AND LOST TIME.

Does ACDSEE PRO making the same?

Change binding stays greyed out until you select the existing database files. My files were labeled "unmounted" in the database maintenance wizard. I drilled down through the "unmounted" drive and found my old "camera" directory where I stored all the pics. Once I selected that I could then "change binding" to the new drive location.

Worked great. This was due to a new hard drive install.

Did you do that in connection with the new update? If so, please give me a complete how to for dummys.

To all: I have sent an inquiry to the technical support and provided a link to this thread with the hope to get more than a stantard reply. Response should be there in about 72 hours. Will post whether that helps.

Hi,

To all: For those who do have the serial number of zeros, have you recently done anything with the hard drives? (e.g. Add/remove a hard drive to/from your computer, change serial number of your hard drives , and etc.) Also, if you have done something with your hard drives, then did you do that before or after upgrading to ACDSee 8.1?

Can anyone else confirm whether the following solution helps?

"Change binding stays greyed out until you select the existing database files. My files were labeled "unmounted" in the database maintenance wizard. I drilled down through the "unmounted" drive and found my old "camera" directory where I stored all the pics. Once I selected that I could then "change binding" to the new drive location.

Hi there

Same problem here. In my installation, ACDSee is installed localy but the database is installed on a drive on a network server that is mapped to my computer as u:\ - the complete path is u:\acdsee\database\80.
The pics are located on the same server but on another share - the full path is m:\pictures.
Within 8.0 out of the CD, everything works. After the upgrade, to 8.1 all thumbnails are gone, the categories are empty and the linkt to the pictures says that they are located in a path u:\media\pictures (which in fact never existed).

I even tryed with a plain new installation of acdsee in the scenario mentioned above with no success.

Has anybody a solution now or an official answer from support?

To all users still suffering this problem - if you have contacted Tech support with a full breakdown of this issue don't expect a satisfactory response -

Here is what they emailed me in response to my query about the issue: (this was after they closed the support ticket because I hadn't replied to it in one day and I had to get it re-opened)

"if you are having problems with the upgrade, don't install it"

wow excellent support there! It should be blatantly obvious to them by now that this is not just some isolated issue with some guy who hasn't set up his PC properly - a lot of people are suffering this problem and I'd like to know if they are even bothered about doing anything about it?
