Thank you for your replies!

Yes, some functions won't be available, when you exclude everything from the database. One of the functions is the calendar, but I won't miss this feature, for sure. But there are other features I would miss absolutely, e.g. the search function does not include excluded objects and metadata cannot be displayed in thumbnail view. Because of that, a deactivation of the database feature would be preferrable over the exclusion of all objects.

The thumbnail caching is the one and only reason for my desire to disable the database feature in ACDSee. Caching thumbnails is said to speed up the browsing of pictures but the opposite can be observed. Todays computer are fast enough to render a huge amount of pictures in no time. But limitations to the performance of hard disk drives and the mediocre performance of ACDSee's database slow down a. the starting process and b. the browsing of a directory. Furthermore, the cached thumbnails blow up the size of the database and my regular backups become more and more a nuisance to me and everything because of thumbnails I do not wish to backup, at all!

But as the deactivation of the database is no integrated feature of the program and excluding all objects from the database will result in a strip down of features in ACDSee, I will have to live with the program 'as is'.

@samdring: which program do you use to write IPTC information and which fields have you decided to use?

I suspect Sam is right. You might think that "excluding" everything would do this, but as Sam says there are things that ADCSee will only do with "included" images, so even if you don't use the info (which you don't want to, and I think Sam doesn't either) you still have to have it. In my case I "use" the database for initial entry and searching, but as I copy everything the images files I just don't bother backing it up.

And of course, it does store the thumbnails . . .

Tankred
I can see where you are coming from - I am the same with iptc etc
I don't see how you could do it, however, and stuff like the calendar would fail to function - no?

Hi!

Is there a way to disable the database completely?

I just don't need the database functions and like to organize my pictures only with IPTC informations.

Thank you,
