OK, now I'm really confused. I just purchaed the canon 50d camera and can't get the RAW files to work in ACDSee 10. IS THERE A PLUG IN OR NOT? I have read through here and I'm not clear if there actually is a plug in for ACDSee 10?

Most of the posts are pretty old. Please help!

Interesting all this discussion about Canon 50D RAW (CR2) problems with ACDSee. I too have that problem with my CR2 files but I now also have the same problem trying to use V10 with my older Canon Pro 90 IS CRW FILES! Up until V10 ACDSee was my choice and the product I also purchased for work. I must have at least 4000 CRW files that are indexed with ACDSee--now useless if I have to switch to using Adobe. I had many discussions with ACDSee 'tech' people and they finally simply said they can't help me! So here I set with ALL my raw files, CRW and CR2, being displayed as a horrible overexposed bunch of trash.

But, I do have a workaround. Takes two things, ACDSee and Adobe DNG converter (free software). I can convert files to DNG and then run these in ACDSee and they work just fine. SO WHY THE H... CAN'T ACDSee tech support get this together?????????????

I think this whole problem came about with some screw-up in V10 as prior to that I had NO problem working with RAW (CR2) files!

What really sucks here is that I have probably purchased 6 versions of ACDSee over many years and now I can't recommend the program to anyone!

I just installed picassa to verify. You are right the displayed pictures looks quite nice but as I already said only basic adjustments are possible.

Actually, my understanding is that Picasa is kind of like the *non* Pro versions of ACDSee - it really does understand RAW formats and convert the RAW data to RGB for display and editing. But it is not true RAW processing, in that it does the conversion *first* and *then* applies whatever settings you ask it to. That is, you are not working with th RAW data but rather with the already-converted data. Meaning you don't actually get any of the advantages of shooting RAW from an image qualiy perspective.

At least, that's what I've read. Easiest test would be to take an image shot with absolutely the wrong WB - something shot under tungsten light but using the "shade" camera WB preset, for example (or vice versa), and then try to correct the color. If you can completely recover all the original color simply by moving the WB slider, then I guess it really must be working with the RAW data and not the already-converted RGB data...

Can anyone at ACDsee Answer the question, "When will the canon 50D RAW Update be availiable?" if so please answer.

No, there is not answer to this question. Implementing new RAW formats is a research and development kind of work. You have a list of formats to integrate and you start working on them. If you only have easy formats in that list it is pretty easy to come up with an update early. If you have many tricky formats it takes more time to find out all specific details.

This is the reason why there is not fixed date for such a release. It is released as soon as it gets done.

I just installed picassa to verify. You are right the displayed pictures looks quite nice but as I already said only basic adjustments are possible.

I'm not shooting raw for basic adjustments but to have full control. This is not the case with picassa or any other "more viewer than processor" orientated application.

If you like the results you get with picassa I can suggest switching back to jpeg schooting and using ACDsee. This way you get the same adjustment options on the file as you would with picassa + all other functions that come with ACDsee.

There is more to shooting raw than just the ability of viewing the image data in an application. RAW does not equal better quality over Jpeg. If you have no experience you will get better results if shooting jpeg initially. Tweaking raw images to their maximum quality is a tough job that needs a lot of knowledge and experience. If one is not willing to invest into things like "How to correctly white balance a picture / how to sharpen-remove noise without loosing detail" you will be better off just shooting jpeg. You don't have any trouble with applications then and filesize is much smaller and better to work with.

Hello haynes,

I have as much information as you have but if I remember correctly ACD sends out an email notification when such updates become available.

BTW, the lateset version of XnView does work with the 50d RAW format, but is realllllly slooooowwww.....

Picassa as it also supports RAW

With RAW formats you have different levels of support. Just viewing them often is quite easy because those applications are just showing you the embedded JPEG that was integrated into the raw by the camera after the shoot.

This is compressed data and quality is much less than the real raw. Those applications also cannot process the raw files as it would be possible with ACDsee after the raw update.

I guess it is a 22.5 MB 4770x3177 embedded Jpeg that I am editing and saving. Looks pretty good to me.

I'd settle to be able to at least see this or any other 50D embedded Jpeg in acdsee.

Anyways..I'm done bantering. Picassa works fine as a file manager. It's free so I'm not out any money.

Moongate,

I have to jump in in this because you stated incorrect hypotesis as facts.

First of all, Adobe did release a RAW update for the Canon 50D immediately after the camera had been released (over one month ago) and it might be a beta but it is rock solid and it hasn't given me any problem in a month. I'm not sure why you say it cannot be called a stable camera update. Have you used it?

I have to correct you that I was not stating a hypothesis as facts but just quoting what Adobe says about those early releases on their camera raw page:

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

Note: Adobe is often able to provide preliminary support for raw files from new camera models not listed above. Camera Raw and Lightroom will open and edit these files, but profiling and testing is not complete.

I purchased my copy of AcdSee PRO and right now I have no use for it, I reverted to using Photoshop Elements. Why it's taking over a month to release an update it's beyong me.

If you are still interested in the "why" I will post an explanation for it again for you to review. Please keep in mind that I am a voluntary moderator and a paying customer just like you. So from my point of view I would also like to have regular updates although I don't have the money to buy every new model. Anyway keeping an eye on the raw solutions market I know that only the two majors do support the 50D yet (that is my knowledge of 2 weeks ago) and that the rest of the competition is working on it.

To understand why some raw solutions have quick support and others need to work hard to get it will be explained in the following text. This is not an excuse but should help to understand the "why":

Question: Why is there still no RAW support for.....

Answer: Big companies have license contracts with every camera manufacturer they support and the costs of these licenses are reflected in their prices.

Many developers with good RAW support have to follow a different strategy. They have to analyze and implement new formats without these camera manufacturer instructions and they release RAW updates within reasonable time for new cameras.

The conclusion is that big players can offer RAW support even before new models hit the market and others shortly after new models are available.

I can understand that everybody with a new camera wants initial support by the chosen application to continue with the workflow as used to.

Since ACD provides regular updates for RAW support, my suggestions for the meantime is:

1. You could choose to shoot RAW + Jpeg if your camera supports it. This way you could work with the Jpegs while you wait for the update and delete them later.

2. Convert to DNG using the free Adobe DNG converter. This way you could even embed your original RAW while being able to work with your files in ACDsee.

I purchased my copy of AcdSee PRO and right now I have no use for it, I reverted to using Photoshop Elements. Why it's taking over a month to release an update it's beyong me. In the last AcdSee update, last week, there is finally the compatibility for the EOS1000 which was released in June. Frankly I don't care about the reasons or excuses for not keeping up with the market, and I don't wanna hear it that the software doesn't get updated often because of piracy. If that's AcdSee major concern that they should have a big banner on their main webpage stating "We don't update our software often because of piracy" and I will gladly give my money to some other company who cares about its customers.

Again, as of Oct 2nd, AcdSee PRO 2.5 to me it's useless.

Any release date for Canon 50D raw yet? Photomatix now supports it. I know it seems like we are hounding ACDSee, but it is actually quite a compliment that we rely so heavily on our prefered ACDSee to do post processing.

It is also difficult when Canon switched between the 40D to the 50D in only 12 months. If you keep up with the latest camera... you end up with a fairly high percentage of time that you can't use RAW (at least the way we want to) with ACDSee.

If you can, Just give us the estimated release date so we can stop checking every day if it has been released.

Thanks, RHMiller

Hello moriclau, the DNG converter 4.5 does not support the 50D. The next Version is 4.6 and then there is even 5.0 but the most current version actually is 5.1 So its the next->next->next version you are looking for which is already available for quite some time.

See here:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop/cameraraw/win/DNG_Camera_Raw_5_1.zip

Now it should be working, right?

Hi,

This will serve my purpose fine while i wait for Eos 50d support.

My mistake was that I just googled "Adobe DNG converter" and never thought about checking if i was on the page of the most recent version.

Thanks again,
