Ok. I've checked out the plugin options under Tools. I found the plugin for PSP files and I think therein lies the problem. It's OLD!

Corel bought out JASC in 2004 (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel2/Section/Press/Release&sid=1047022959204&cid=1047023901915)

The plugin only lists file format of PSP. The new format is .pspimage

According to the PSP plugin Properties the version is 2.1.18.000, dated 2000, written by Loren Kirby.

Additional info when viewing Help on the plugin in question.

PSP file format Help

PSP is the file format natively used by Jasc's Paint Shop Pro. This file format supports everything saved in Paint Shop Pro, including layers, alpha channels, and so on. Image data is saved losslessly. ACD Systems plug-in enabled software uses the ID_PSP plug-in to view the PSP file format.

Files in this format are relatively large, and few other programs support it, so it is a poor choice for distributing images to large audiences.

I've been active with online photography communities since late 2004 and Paint Shop Pro is a viable software item. The "poor mans" copy of Adobe Photoshop so to speak and quite popular.

Why is ACDSee so far behind on updating the plugins?

I don't mean any of the above to come across in a mean way. I have no affiliation with PSP other than being a user of the software for the last 4 or 5 years now. From what I see ACDSee Pro 2.5 looks like exactly what I need for keywording, categorizing, and overall management of my image files.

The workaround for now might be to disable the plugin that handles that format - assuming you don't need ACDSee to actually *display* those files, but merely to not choke on them.

Thanks Melanie...

Here's more info that may be helpful; when I posted early regarding this problem with .pspimage files I was using a laptop running Windows Vista. Now, after getting home, I tried the same thing using my desktop PC and I'm NOT having any trouble with folders, and or files, with PSP X2 file extensions. My PC is running Windows XP Service Pack 3.

I opened two folders, and I also opened specific files in folders - all of which containced photo files with .pspimage extensions. I'll triple check later...but XP seems "ok".

Is there a fix in place for the .pspimage file extension issue?

Hi,

ACDSee is having issues whenever it browses to a location with a 16bit Paint Shop Pro file and we have been able to reproduce it. Unfortunately, I can't provide information on when it will be resolved. QA and Dev think the cause may be the current ID_PSP.apl plug-in so turning off the plug-in is the current workaround.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Dangit! I just purchased ACDSee Pro 2.5 this week after checking it out for a couple of days with the 30 day trial.

When I open a folder that has any image with a .pspimage extension (from Corel Paint Shop Pro X2) the application closes with the error msg described in this thread title.

If I open any folder with .jpg's or .ARW (Sony RAW file) ACDSee runs just fine.

Is there a fix in place for the .pspimage file extension issue? I hate to think I just spent $100 on something that doesn't work correctly. :-(

I've had this problem too. I've been using ACDSee Pro (Version 8). I think it has to do with video files (AVI's). When I am in a folder with AVI's (shot using a consumer point and shoot camera) the system will often crash. Can I disable the video files? Or does the newer version of the software not have problem with video files?

last friday I took advantage of ACDSee's offer, paid for it, got the license key, installed the program and whenever I start it, I see the logo of the program on the screen and at the same time there appears the following message: "ACDSee has encountered a system error and will close now" - and it does close, before I could do anything.
de-installed it, thouroughly cleaned the registry, restarted, new installation (of course as admin), same thing, but when I'm logged in as admin, no problem at all, it runs perfectly smooth and fast.
For my curiosity and to find out if it's got something to do with mobile phones and corresponding software, I syncronised my nokia 6300 running nokia PC Suite, as admin, before I started Pro 2.5, no problems either. since I don't want to be logged in as admin all the time this is rather annoying. having read your comments about ACDSee's reaction to queeries like that doesn't make me feel too optimistic and I'd like to cancel my order and get the money back, any ideas out there on how to do this?

setup:
    win XP sp3, amd athlon64 3700+ 2,21 GHz, 2 GB RAM, graphics is Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS, samsung 500MB SATA-drives.

I've had this problem several times, and here is what worked for me, although obviously it won't work for everyone. I'm running Vista on an HP laptop, Pro 2.5 and several times in the last month had the program stop working.

Both times I got things going again just by doing a System Restore back to just before I had the problem.

For what it's worth, before doing the Restore (as kind of a last resort before I was going to do an image restore on the entire computer) I had uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times, no joy there.

In my case I have a feeling the problem is something to do with the device manager, as I plug a smartphone into the computer to sync my contacts/calendar database and whenever I do that I get some funky messages from the device manager and then sometimes later a warning that device manager stopped working. Although it's not the case that right after this Pro 2.5 stops working, but still I have a hunch. (I also run Skype, don't know if that's the problem.)

Anyway, I now make sure to set a restore point in Vista every few days, in case it happens yet again I plan to just do the restore.

My story and I'm sticking to it, good luck everyone.

I too am having ACDSee 2.5 pro (build 363) bomb out on my Vista Ultimate 32bit laptop, however I can get it to crash on demand... Basically the steps that can cause ACDSee to crash on my laptop are:

Open up ACDSee (duh!)

Do something that requires an database update

Save image and return back to the thumbnails

Without closing ACDSee, put the laptop to sleep

Restart laptop after a few minutes/hours/whenever you like

Go into ACDSee and try to do ANYTHING.

Crash.

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Dual Core CPU and 4GB ram, 1920x1200 res display with an ATI GPU. There's two USB2 harddrives attached which are flagged as excluded from database.

I've tried all the answers to this problem flagged in this thread; they make no difference. Here's the info from Vista's problem report:

I guess I finally found the root of my problem -- it is my thumbnails. I can't figure out why my thumbnails keep becoming corrupted, but I finally found a fix..

Will this proposed solution remove only the thumbnail information, or all the database info? I have MANY hours invested in tagging, captioning, etc. and would hate to lose all these years of work (I've been pretty faithful to ACDSee from the early versions, which at this point is the only reason I'm still trying to make this one work, instead of jumping ship).

First of all, let me be clear that I did not embed any DB Data into my exif information. The only DB info I used were: Categories, Ratings, and Tags. Secondly, you should always backup your DB information (i.e.: the entire directories I spoke about in this post) -- even if it has to be the corrupt DB just so you can always roll back to where you were. In this manner, you at least have the peace of mind knowing you won't be any worse off than you are now.

Having said that, YES -- all my DB info (Categories, etc) restored accurately and flawlessly following the instructions I gave above. I wish you the best of luck, and be sure to let us know how it goes.

I guess I finally found the root of my problem -- it is my thumbnails. I can't figure out why my thumbnails keep becoming corrupted, but I finally found a fix that, up to this point, seems to be working with some consistency. It seems to fix both errors:

5) Goto C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\ACD Systems\Catalogs\20ProOld\DEFAULT

------------------------------------------------------

I've been having the same problem that everyone is posting here and elsewhere in these forums.

So, I just finished reading all the posts. I did use Paint Shop Pro a while back and thought I would try to resolve if this was the problem. I searched for all the PSP files in My Photos directory and found a few images and many pspbrwse.jbf files. So, I started Pro 2.5 and navigated to my 2005 directory where there was a jbf file. 2.5 immediately shutdown without even a warning message. Oddly enough last night I used 2.5 for a few hours and only had a few crashes with a warning message. I then rebuilt the database and shutdown for the night only to discover this problem today.

So, I restart 2.5 and browse to another directory with a .jbf file and was able to view images and delete the .jbf file with 2.5 Pro. I wander a few more directories and all seemed ok till I returned to the 2005 directory and then CRASH with no warning.

A more robust database/program would be appreciated. I wish there was a specific activity that I could articulate that causes the crash but there is not, at least to my novice eye. I want to take pictures not tweak with a program. Please send help. My next step is to delete all PSP files and rebuild. My fingers are crossed.

Also, I have submitted a support ticket for a the nonfunctioning back up problem I have so hopefully the support team will be back after the Holidays.
