I am definitely not using D-lighting and this is no small correction I have to make on the Exposure slider as I begin my workflow. The RAW files and the simultaneous properly exposed jpgs are not anywhere close to the same exposure. The RAW are continuously *much* darker.

I will follow-up with a support ticket to ACD. It seems like to me they do not read these forums otherwise they would be responding here.

Agree 100%...this is the direction that other photo management programs are taking, so ACDSee would be smart to keep up with the competition, as this is a highly valued feature.

Chas - thanks for the reply. 20+ years in computer business, lots of managing software development, oldest son a software developer - so I do understand all of this. But I admit I thought a port was possible, and understand why you are not doing that. I will tell you from experience tho, that if it took 10 yrs. to develop the original, it should take less than 3 to do a complete re-write for the Mac. Maybe 2. All the experience of the original development does not have to be repeated, and a lot learned in round 1 is repeatable/duplicatable.

I am running ACDSee 10 in VMware's Fusion - but it is a hassle, and Fusion is a resource hog on the Mac. I am glad to have it for my legacy Windows programs that I cannot do without...such as ACDsee.

And especially thanks for the tip on the batch tools - I had no idea they were available. I use "re-size" more than any other editing function, so this will indeed get me what I need now.

Be glad to be a part of the beta team......done lots of software development from a management standpoint, and I'm real good at pointing out software weaknesses and needs.

Hello, as the title describes, i have a problem with opening images where special characters reside in the name. For example i have received an image with the special "i" from the Turkish language, the program tries to change this to an regular i but cannot find the image then. Also when using Chinese characters, it converts these to question marks.

So after converting the image name and trying to open it, it gives me the following error:

The image(s) are no longer in the specified location, or their path has becom invalid. If the image is on removable media, please reinsert the media. If the path has recently changed please make sure it is still a valid path.

After this message i get(for example)

"Cannot open C:\??.jpg" but the name is as follow: 測試.jpg

I allready installed all languages in regional settings from control panel in windows and it did not help

I'll pass this one on for investigation, but in the meantime you can retrieve the images by restoring them from your Time Machine backup (if you're on Leopard or Snow Leopard) or whatever other backup system you use.

If you don't have a backup, you could try one of the popular undelete utilities like FileSalvage, Tech Tool Pro, etc.

If you're not regularly backing up your work, now is clearly the time to develop such a strategy! I can't imagine trusting a computer -- any computer -- with important files without a backup.

Hi

I'm a big acdsee fan, I've used the pc version for a long time and I'm glad that there's now a Mac version too.

By the way I would like to report a very strange bug, I was using the batch tool to rename some picture, my intentions was to rename all the images from 01 an so on (01.jpg 02.jpg etc.), than I make a big mistake instead of using the function counter I write 01 directly in the name field, I hit the run button and the images completely disappears, not only from acdsee but also from finder and the recycle bin. It's for sure a my mistake but the program shouldn't let me do ii in the first place, right?

I have a follow-up question, if I drag a category over a folder by mistake, is there a quick way to un-assign them? If I simply select the images in the folder and uncheck the box, it takes forever, seemingly even longer than it takes to assign a category the same way. It would have been nifty to be able to drag a category over a folder and reverse the effect by holding down Shift or something.

Yes, it is under Tools | Open in Editor | Configure editors.

Then select the path of the editor of your choice.

Once configured, there is a keyboard shortcut (ctrl-e in 2009) or you can see choices in the toolbar.

A friend forwarded me the link to the beta of ACDSee beta for Mac today. YEEAHHHH!!! I switched over to a Mac a couple of years ago, but ACDSee for the PC is one reason I still run a virtual machine. I am really excited that the program will now be available for the Mac, even though I just paid to upgrade to the latest version of Pro for the PC. Now that SnagIt and ACDSee are both available, there is almost no reason to even launch Windows.

Does anyone know the release date for the software?

Good luck with this, and I will spread the word to my other Mac friends.

Hello, I had ACDSee 5.0 (FotoCanvas) on my laptop, but it just crashed and now I have to re-install it again. Previous times I had to do this I just went online and downloaded it, typed in my licensing #s, and that was it. I was back in business

Now I can't locate it anywhere online...Is it still available?

I LOVE ACDSee 5.0, easier to use than PhotoShop and just about any other photo editing program out there. I know I should upgrade, but I'd like 5.0 just in case I don't like the upgrade.

Thanks!

Hmm, I just tried this on a folder of 4000 files. Couldn't get ACDSee to crash, and going into Process mode took 2 seconds. Is there something special about your folder - on a slow network drive, on a removable drive with no ID, etc - that might be causing what you are describing?

The storage was fast internal HDD. The problem is Acdsee reading the directory which can be seen in a progress indicator bottom RH corner. Acdsee will not allow process of a photo until this directory reading has completed. After completion you can open photo proces in 2 seconds like you say. I have no idea what Acdsee is reading to introduce this delay but it sure does make working with directories containing large number of files hard work.

Further investigation has revealed directories with mixed file names increases the time Acdsee takes to read a directory. If all files are named photo01 photo02 ... its a lot faster.

Latest test - 12,000 files Acdsee took 1min 20 secs to read the directory before it would allow image process.

As for crashing, I can repeat the crash on 3 different machines with different configs and hardware. This crashing problem has been with Acdsee for a long time.

Bottom line - Acdsee gets in a mess if you work it hard.

Having used ACDSee Pro 3 for a couple of weeks now to sort through and categorize my image collection, it surprises me that the few annoyances that stand out the most for me are barely mentioned here. Either I'm the only one to have found them, which I find hard to believe, or nobody's reporting them.

My current issue has to do with the slide show feature. If I just start a slide show with some selected folders in random mode, I often find myself wanting to pause, turn off random mode, and go to the next or previous image. However, when I do this, it goes to the image with the number adjacent to the number of images that have been shown. That is, if I have 1000 images, watch 25 random images and pause, let's say on image 540. Turning off random and going to the next image doesn't show image 541, but rather 26. Or at least, that's what I think is happening.

This is really annoying sometimes, and I don't understand where this problem has come from. I remember having an older version of ACDSee some years back, and it didn't behave this way.

I want to know if this is a bug that needs reporting, or if a convenient workaround exists.

On further thought I might simply wait till April and get the latest as that will, I assume, be fully compatible with Win 7. BTW, I found Zoner not nearly as fast as ACDSee, especially with alot of photos. Microsoft's free image gallery app is better than I expected but it doesn't have the editing tools of Zoner/ACDSee. But it is quite fast.

Dand said:

But I find it a bit sad that I can’t use Alt+Return to open and close the Properties pane (as I can in Manage and View mode). Still nice to know that I have access to it in Develop and Edit mode too!

It would be quite nice if the properties dialog could be quickly accessed from Develop mode. In Adobe Lightroom, I can't edit properties like caption or keywords while in Develop mode, but at least it's quick and easy to switch to what they call Loupe view (similar to ACDSee Pro's View mode), add a caption or keyword or whatever, then switch back. In ACDSee Pro the same action sometimes seems to require saving changes, etc., and is much slower. If it were possible consistently to get to Properties while in Develop, then ACDSee Pro would actually have the advantage over Lightroom here.

In case anybody wonders why this is useful, I'll explain for myself. My workflow is a process, but the steps in the process sometimes overlap. That is, sometimes I don't think of a caption until after I've started working on a photo.

I usually find the Batch rename tool able of doing just anything I have ever wanted. Would it be to your satisfaction if the same renaming options (in some way) would be present in the export dialog? Or what kind of renaming options are you looking for?

The system I've come up with in Lightroom is to rename images with a long string with three parts, providing (a) capture date, (b) capture time, and (c) the image number part of the original file name. So, for example, my Pentax K20D produces images with file names like K20D8887, K20D8888, K20D8889, etc. If the picture was taken just after noon on Christmas day 2009, the file would be renamed thus:

20091225-120105-8888

The middle element—the time—means that the picture was taken at 12:01:05 (one minute, five seconds after noon).

In one of ACDSee Pro's rename dialogs I'm able to get close to the above format, but I can't get there exactly. I have about 30,000 images named this way already and I kind of like it. SO I expect I simply won't be using ACDSee Pro for this part of my process.

As for resizing, yes, I think this is important. I often find myself sending files to people (sometimes editors, sometimes photo display services, etc.) who specify a maximum one-side size in pixels. I can do it in Lightroom, and in Picasa, very easily.

Otto,

I have experienced all your above scenarios.

I believe the lock gets put on the files when the thumbnails are building. So don't try to move any files until all the thumbnails have appeared (watch for the % in the bottom right corner to disappear.)

Try hitting F5 to refresh the folder map. Sometimes I do a large move and ACDSee leaves the folder name in the original folder even though it did the move correctly. Sometimes F5 refreshes it. Othertimes I have to restart ACDSee to get these folder names to disappear.

As for moving the originals folder. I don't have any advice here. I would think that originals folder would move with the real files. I know the latest update dealt with something like this but not sure if it was exactly this.
