I'll add my two bits.

Since getting a MAC last year and liking it, I am very close to adding a second one inthe house. The biggest obstacle is ACDSee since my entire database, 15,000+ images sits on PC. That, by the way, would be a must-have; the ability to transfer my PC ACDSee data to the Mac version when ready!

Please hurry up, but do it right ;-))

Thank you, Heidi! That made a lot of difference, though I'm still confused as to why it works this way. And I would still like to save the two unnecessary clicks for every time I assign a category to a folder.

Hi everyone

I'm having problems with PM 2009 installed on machines that are pointing to a database on a network server. On the satellite computers, sometime if i double click photomanager, it wont boot up. I double check the windows taskmanager and under the processes tab, i will see ACDSee11.exe process running but nothing boots to the main computer screen. I will have to kill that particular process, click the application icon and then acdsee will boot up. This happens off and on particularly when i open and close Acdsee from time to time on the computers in the satellite offices that are pointing to our central database.

Does acdsee have problems with network drives? is there a work around or patch that i can use to remedy this? All these computers are running OS XP sp2. Are vista or win7 better?

thanks for any help.

William Porter Photography on "export questions"

I continue to like ACDSee Pro's processing options a great deal, but I feel quite differently about the program's file management features. I have a couple of questions about export.

1. Can I export while in View mode? When I'm in Process mode, I know how to click on the Save button (bottom left corner of window) and select Export. But since I can't edit captions, etc., while in Process, I sometimes switch back to View. Then I want to export. In View, all I can find is a Save As command, and it doesn't have the same options as the Export dialog in Process. In particular I want to be able to specify the pixel dimensions of the exported jpeg. Anyway to do this in View?

2. Is it possible to rename files on export, as it is in Lightroom? I don't think so but I thought I'd ask. The only option I can see is the option to add a prefix to the file name. I was thinking of something more ambitious.

3. In the Export dialog, the Output Directory option at the bottom: Is there a way to get this to remember and restore my last selection each time? For some reason, this always defaults to my main Raw directory. But I use the export dialog to export jpegs to a different folder hierarchy where I keep only jpeg copies. This is one of the things that most annoys me about ACDSee Pro. Lightroom always remembers the settings I used for the last export, and to make it even easier, if I'm exporting images one after another to the same output folder, there's a drop-dead simple "Export with previous" command that does just that and doesn't bring up the dialog at all. With ACDSee Pro, I have to fiddle with the Export dialog for every darn picture.

4. While I'm at it, what is the difference between "save as" and "export"? I think I understand the export dialog, which has more options. What's the point of the "Save as" dialog? As far as I can tell, it's only point is to allow me to save a jpeg full size. But I can do that with the export dialog.

5. Finally, when I export from ACDSee Pro, the caption and the keywords do NOT seem to be exported. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks,

For any others who stumble on this thread... my $0.02

I've been interested in getting into this and have concluded the following:

There seem to be two ways to go about it. If you have an existing camera you can look for an underwater housing, I was recommended ikelite (http://www.ikelite.com/) by my local dive center. Otherwise you can get an underwater camera (from v. cheap to aprox $600).

The underwater housing route can be very expensive, the housing for a Canon 5D MK II and a 24-105mm lens is in the order of NZD3000. It's a modular system and allows full access to the controls of the camera. In addition to the underwater housing, you can get underwater strobes. Ideally two powerful strobes (one on each side of the camera) is apparently the way to go. When aiming the strobes, aim the beams to converge in front of your subject, rather than on it.

That's as much as I've figured out so far, would be interested in hearing more from any others...

Hello, I am an ACDSEE user that reads manga (japaneese comics) on Acdsee. The problem is that some comic pictures come as 2 pages of the book at once, and once I zoom into a page, every time I go to the next page, the zoom will be on the right side of the page and I have to scroll to the left. It becomes very tiresome.

Is there any way I can set the default zoom so that every time I go to the next picture, it starts at the right side of the picture?

Hi all, I am finding all of a sudden that if I click on a file, frequently (3 out of 5 times, perhaps), the file will jump to another point in the stack and the pointer will jump to the Properties panel and the sort will have changed from Filename to Custom sort. Any idea why this might be and what I might do to correct it?

I'll start cataloging regularly. I'll also try dropping the category instead of checking. My challenge with that is that I have multiple categories for a pic: ie type of coral, type of coral disease, on multiple pics in a file. Playing around with a different method may be insightful.

I just tried to scan a color negative in Vuescan from my Dimage Multi Pro. All settings were correct and the resulting image in Vuescan looked correct. However, if I save it as a tiff or a dng, then the resulting saved file looks like the negative rather than the corrected color. Also, the rotation I applied in Vuescan was lost. basically, ACDSee shows me an upside down negative. If I save as a jpg from the scanner, it looks correct. I want to work with a raw file however. Thanks for any help.

I received a pre-order email for ACDSee 12 this morning touting a host of new features. While I have nothing against the new features and some actually sound quite nice, I would really like to see the developers spend much more of their efforts focusing on fixing what doesn't work right in the current versions of ACDSee.

ACDSee is easily the most cripplingly bug-ridden application I currently use, or have used in some time. And it has been for the past several versions. I am so frustrated that a vital tool that I use constantly is so problematic that I waste hours of time a week (sometimes a day) wrestling with its various problems. I have been using ACDSee since the first version, and love it's rich feature set and logical, efficient workflow. These are some of the main reasons I have not switched away from ACDSee long ago- I cannot find an application that does what ACDSee does... when it works.

Before you assume I'm afflicted with a marginal case problem due to my own specific installation, know that I have had many of the same problems over three versions of ACDSee, on many different computers, at least three different operating systems and multiple service packs. I have rebuilt my database from scratch (losing many, many hours worth of meticulous data entry in the process, even with embedding and cataloging). No amount of trouble shooting has made any improvement.

Here are the nagging problems I've seen for at least the last two versions:

1.) Import is horribly broken

Agonizingly slow Imports -up to 1000% longer! - 1 hour vs. 3 1/2 minutes) compared to copying from Explorer or other photo managers such as Picasa (free), FastStone (free), ZonerPro 12, built-in Windows Import, J River Media Center, etc. It will often break/timeout before it finishes and require another long import.

Does not recognize Windows Mobile devices

Acquire from scanner is broken (not in any other application I use)

WIA acquisition is broken (not in any other application I use)

2.) Similar to the import sluggishness, ACDSee also suffers from slow file write operations. The amount of time it takes to save the changes to an image are excruciating.

3.) ACDSee often hangs when performing a file operation (such as rename) in the folder tree that forces an end process shutdown

4.) When it doesn't hang, the file tree doesn't update to reflect changes made to it nor does there seem any way to manually refresh it.

5.) Often crashes when resizing window (solution for which is to reset all panes to original, losing all interface customizations)

6.) ACDSee needs to support standard metatag fields. Almost every image management application supporting 5 star ratings I've tried writes the rating to a tag that Windows can see and uses any rating that Windows writes, which is absolutely necessary if I'm going to create playlists on my MediaCenter PC of photos that I actually want to see as opposed to hours of mediocre or outright crappy ones. Finally implementing full support for XMP tags would also be a big step forward.

7.) Needs crash protection. The image basket is useless if I'm going to lose hours of hard work when ACDSee decides to lock-up or "quit unexpectedly", which occurs frequently.

8.) Adjust Timestamp bug over network http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/adjust-time-stamp-major-implementation-flaw

9.) Interoperability between multiple copies of ACDsee on different computers: I have a large network attached storage device where I store all my photos. I may import from my desktop computer, or the media PC, or a laptop. I rate and tag photos as I import them so that it's not an unmanageable mess down the line. If I make changes on one, I want them reflected at every PC. Since ACDSee is setup to write the info to a local database, this info isn't automatically available to the other PCs. So, I use the Embed Database Information in Files function so that most of the tags are in the photos and, then, either Catalog or browse to a specific folder and wait for ACDSee to read in this information. However, this method has been highly unreliable and tags many times refuse to show up whether browse or Catalog are used (which REALLY sucked when ACDSystems told me to use this exact method to re-create my database after years of entering information and lots of it didn't reappear and, BTW, didn't fix the crashing problems either).

---

I've been through several development cycles where we were told improvements were arriving in the upcoming version, only to find out things didn't get fixed, at least for many people. I would really like to see a good-length public/semi-public beta period where end users who have suffered for years with the same problems can test for fixes and have their feedback listened to. I have been a loyal customer since ACDSee32 and have many, many hours invested in refining my photo library database. I want to LOVE being an ACDSee user again. I want to stop resenting feeling stuck with a crippled application just because I have so much time invested in it.

ACDSee, simply put, has the best, most comprehensive feature sets and workflows of any image manager out there and, if it weren't for the ridiculous and long-standing functionality issues, I would say I couldn't imagine ever using another. As it stands, however, I have resorted to using a number of other image managers to get around the horrible problems I've been experiencing and almost given up hope of ever seeing fixed.

I would like nothing more than to help ACDSee's developers tackle these issues once and for all before they release version 12 because it's really the last chance I'm going to give this product before it's simply not worth the trouble anymore.

PLEASE, ACDSystems, let us help you to help us by having a robust beta period where you invite users who are having specific, repeatable problems to help find and test solutions so that version 12 is, like Windows 7, a release that rehabilitates the brand and makes customers excited to tell others they are ACDSee users again.

well, the explanation is simple enough--

per: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems

the ext3 file system used by linux (typical for NAS boxes) doesn't support a created date attribute. not sure what the implications of that are--have to give it some time to sink in..

what a pain in the NAS (sorry, had to..)

You can try Database | Optimize Database. That might help.

If you use categories, deleting the database is not a very good workaround and should only be used as a last resort. (An embed of data and then re-categorizing it all takes a long time.) When I moved to Pro 3, I started with a fresh database and catalog'ed my embedded files. It took 2 days to catalog it all -- mostly because when I wasn't paying attention to the catalog process, ACDSee would crash.

Again, I have found the quickest way is to not check the category boxes but instead drop the category onto the image. I don't have any performance issues when I search for my categories, just assigning.

hmm, so more testing reveals that this file creation date problem:

1) happens only on network shares on my NAS box and, more importantly for this forum,

2) has nothing to do with ACDSee. it happens whatever software is used, so sorry ACDSee..

similarly, i have determined that when i copy files from local drives and paste them to NAS shares, the file created date is set to the file modified date, unless the file modified date is in the future, in which case the file created date is set to the current date. no idea yet if this is normal for NAS shares in general, or for my brand (dlink dns-323), or if i have something weird going on (certainly doesn't seem normal). will report back if i learn anything useful.

Hello to all

Right now I received a pre-order offer for ACDSee 12. Thanks for that. However, I am really disappointed to learn that the print dialog still has not been improved. You are adverting the time saving features of ACDSee 12. Those I can find on your web side are useless to me and for noise reduction I guess I rather stick to the experts like noise ninja or neat image. What me really costs time and what is always aboring is the print dialog. I print photos quite often and always borderless. Hence I have to crop the image to the right paper size. Of course the print dialog offers me to do that ("Fit to page" & Crop image to fit print format"). But is far than enough. I cannot select at which side the pictures are cropped - horrible for portraits. Another issue is that I cannot select in print menu which part of the photo is to printed. I have to do this before selecting the print menu. Either with the right aspect ratio, then I have to save to crop in a new file which I have to delete after printing. Or roughly on screen and print via the context meno of the crop frame. That is not time saving at all!

So let me pray for the following improvement of the print dialog:

1.) The crop area to be printed can be adjusted by free "zooming" of the picture in the print preview (where the print margins can be seen). It would be very comfortable when I can use the mouse wheel when the cursor hovers of the picture - Yes, I wish this feature individually for every photo printed to a page!

2.) The crop area to be printed can be selected by panning (I mean moving) the photo over the page preview. It would be very comfortable when I can do this by dragging with the mouse (left click, hold an move).

This would be a real time saving argument. I am a big fan of ACDSee and user since ACDSee32. Today I use ACDSee 10 and have all newer trial version installed, but I am still waiting for this feature before I upgrade. If this feature is implemented, I will upgrade immediately - also to the PRO version, if this comes only with the PRO.

(Sorry when I am not clear - I am not a native English speaker)

Kind regards from Vienna/Austria

Gerhard.

In fact I am very happy with this release also, and I can not state enough how I am waiting for the full version ;-) I am a ACD users since the start of the company, I use ACDSee Pro and Canvas, but I did the switch to Mac three months ago (and yes, I regret I didn't do it earlier, it's a great experience!) but alas I miss my favorite products, so I really hope the ACDSee team brings this Mac version along in the near future, ACDSee is in my humble opinion simply the best viewer available and the windows Pro version is really superb, so go for it ACDSee and bring us the same quality (or even more :-) ) to the Mac! pleaaaase

See comments below

I had a serious slowdown in processing and categorizing. Painfully slow. After trying many things, I re-cataloged all the pic folders, which took about 16 hours. This seemed to fix the slow performance. A couple of questions about cataloging and speed:

1. Does one need to run cataloging periodically for file management?

I find that I have to. About once every week (or so) just before closing Pro 3, I will cat files. Sometimes it will race through and on other occasions it will 're-do' quite a number of folders. No particular set of folders and, certainly, some of those folders have not been touched/altered since last cat. I have found this to be the case over many versions.

2. Does cataloging folders happen automatically? Does opening and closing the program and not leaving up for any length of time stop the cataloging process and cause a slow down?

Catting is automated on opening a new folder for the first time or when contents have been changed by external app although there are occasions when the latter fails. Distinct difference twixt catting and rebuild metadata - catting doesn't touch anything it thinks has not changed whereas 'rebuild' rebuilds regardless.

3. Are there any tips on settings, etc. that may speed up performance?

I do find that when things start to go a bit squiffy, deleting the database helps considerably. I notice you are using categories (I don't - everything in iptc) so, of course, you would need to embed all data before taking this route.

Thanks!

I'd be happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I don't think this is a feature found in the current version (3) of ACDSee Pro.

does anyone else HATE the feature where acdsee asks u if you if u want to save changes everytime u change a file? there needs to be a feature so u can have it replace the original file instead of asking every single time u make a change to a file. this is EXTREMELY annoying and was never a problem when i was using acdsee ver 4.
