According to my tests, the bug is not in the ACDSee's 3 Batch Set operation, because I get the same error when I compare images with EXIF informations set in ACDSee 2.5. The bug is in reading and handling these metadata in ACDSee 3. My workflow: setting database date, batch setting EXIF date/time original maped to datebase date and date/time digitized maped to file properties: created date. It is not a fatal error, have to learn to live with it. Thank you for your time, Marc.

I like the new display but I feel this time ACDSee are more like the "Bill Gates" crew, by bringing a new product to the market and leaving it to the consumer to test. As I mentioned in a previous Topic after sharpening and saving an image, I find later on viewing the same image in ACDSee it is less sharp than the image I worked on. On "Crop". Each time I return to Crop an image in regardless of crop size I must click the size twice since the first showing eg: 3x2 does not crop to this ratio.

This is not a fault but slows your workflow. Why is there not the function to display only the your prefered tools (icons - version 2.5) I hate having to scroll down a list just to crop, lighten, sharpen etc. Why is there no way to deactivate the the saving of Original and Developed folders. This function to me may benefit the few but personally just cloggs up my Harddrive and cost me more time in having to delete.

I hope an Update will be following this new version soon in addressing these issues and others listed here too.

let me explain the reasons why ACDSEE instead to be a perfect tool it is unuseful to me.

1) compatibility with Windows 7. Scrambled search panel. Hopefully will be fixed before next couple of years ..... ;-)

problems coming from 2.5.

2) Search does not permit a search based on the major exif field. For example, If I need to do a search for portrait or landscape pictures, I can't

3) Doesn't use the standard "de facto" ratings used by Microsoft and Adobe. I have a DB of 20k photo and the majority are rated using that system.

4) Doesn't give the possibility, as other softwares do, to embed xmp info (tag, i.e.) into raw files. I hate the .xmp file added to each raw. Why don't permit this? it could be a configurable choice.

All the rest would be really well done, but that missing feature are showstopper to me.

Hi to everybody.

I've a very big problem with database maintenance.

I've changed my hard disk, I've copied all my images (more on 30.000) in the new hard disk, into the same position, but now the database says me to not find my images, because they are on another volume.

How can I fix it?

Thanks for help

I don't understand why removing the database would slow things down... I don't know that it would speed things up, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. but don't see why it would have any effect on the image processing, only things like cataloging, keywording, blah blah that I don't use personally. Others do so it should be an option. But for those that don't use it, if you could 'remove' that feature entirely, then you wouldn't have to deal with alot of the troublesome issues the db causes...

(and excluding the drive doesn't remove or stop the db...)

John R: for guessing at the menu layout, you hit it exactly, and for guessing at the issue, you hit that on the head as well. thank you!

I'm holding off upgrading my computer to Windows 7 for now, but it sounds 50/50 whether ACDSEE Pro V2.5 is going to work or not..... I need to double my RAM before I want to try Windows 7.

I've been very loyal to ACDSee over the years, I've bought at least 8 different versions, going back to ACDSee 2 something. But being forced to buy the 3.0 version seems a stretch, my wife has been out of work for a year.... too bad they don't have any special upgrade packages for longtime loyal customers.

You and I are in the same boat, I know I started using ACDSEE a long time ago, either version 1 or two. It was before the world wide web, we used unix commands to navigate the internet and opened gif images using acdsee in DOS. I've been a user since then, but pro 3 is not what I want, I much prefer lightroom, so a expensive underperforming copy of Lightroom is not what I want.

Perhaps I'll return to the basic ACDSEE for browsing, and use lightroom for editing.

I'm about to delve into Pro 3 and I've got about 12,000 images to organize. I generally work on one desktop at home and a laptop at work and travel. Is there a simple way I can install ACDSEE on both computers and begin to tag my images with keywords but still keep the data on both computers syncronized? I keep all my images on both computers and when I upload new images they go on both computers as well as a backup copy (all on hard drives). Being able to organize my work on both computers would mean tha no matter where I am I can get some work done...obviously my biggest concern is in keeping everything in sync.

I downloaded the file, and indeed, got lots of "Parameter incorrect" message when trying to compare them. As far as i could tell, that was the only thing that went wrong with them. You say these images were the result of batch set of database info into EXIF? I don't actually set any of that info when ACDSee displays the EXIF for the files, so I'm guessing something went wrong with the Batch Set operation. What info were you trying to copy, and to what EXIF fields specifically? Would it be possible - as a workaround for now, not an actual solution to this bug in general, of course - to write to IPTC instead?

They don't *have* to be, of course. I think ACD probably chose to hide them to keep users from shooting themselves in the foot by messing with them. Under most circumstances, most users should *never* have to to think about these folders, or know or care that they are there - no more than you normally need to know about the Windows registry, or the AppData folders under your user name, or any of the myriad other files that applications might create for their own use. If you like, you can make ACDSee display them by hitting Alt-I to go to Advanced Filters and clicking the appropriate box.

And Jabbo, you're right - we don't really disagree in the basic principles here. i find discussions like this valuable when we can find points of agreement!

Changing bit depth can be done, although I don't know that ACDSee lets you do this - it might, in one of the save option dialogs somewhere. but that wouldn't be much of a solution; you'd lose most of your color info. 24 bit images 8 bits per channel) are the norm, and should work fine.

amby said:

I'm considering the offer to upgrade from Photo Manager 2009 to Pro 3, but I'm not at all sure I need the extra features of Pro 3, since I almost never import photos from my camera.

Not sure what you mean by this; the differences between PM 2009 and Pro 3 have nothing to do with importing of photo. It's mostly about RAW processing, non-destructive JPEG processing (both of which are Pro only) and batch processing facilities (including batch copying of database info to IPTC fields in the files themselves, which is one of the crucially important aspects of good Digital Asset Management).

My biggest issue is image distribution to various folders and subfolders. Even after downloading the Pro 3 trial I still can't determine if Pro 3 (or 2009, for that matter) supports some method of allowing the user to setup hotkeys to distribute the file currently showing in the viewer to various folders...

I can't think of a way to do what you suggest with moving to folders. But I strongly urge you to consider *not* using your folder structure to organize your folders based on content like this, but instead, use categories, keywords, and other metadata. If you want a really good source argument for why this is better, as well as just generally fantastic advice for organization in general, check out "The DAM Book" by Peter Krogh, which is the definitive reference for this sort of thing. but in short, the idea is to use folders to organize in ways folders are good for: when every item can belong to one and only one folder, but use other structures for to organize on content. After all, a picture of a horse and a rose could easily belong to both categories or have both keywords assigned, so those are more natural structures to use to record that kind of information. Folders are better for stuff like, what month was this picture taken, or what camera was it taken with, or which backup disk has this file.

Failing that, how about being able to assign hotkeys to categories, i.e.:

That much is doable in theory, although last I tried it with Pro 2.5, it didn't work too well - I'd customize a keystroke to assign a category, and it would work for a while, but before I knew it, the keystroke would suddenly redefine itself to display the contents of that category, or maybe filter the current list of files on that category, rather than assign. I never did experiment enough to figure out if that was something I was dong wrong or what. But you could certainly give it a try. To customize a shortcut for category assignment, go to view-toolbars-customize-keyboard, select "categories" from the dropdown that is also called categories, then select the category you wish to assign a shortcut to. Since you brought it up, I just ent ahead and created a shortcut for the category I use most often, and verified it works for now. I'll try to remember to keep checking it.

Failing all of that, what organization techniques are available that do NOT require mousing in either product? Because ACDSee seems to provide no good organization techniques that do not require mouse interaction. Is there some other tool that I could use for this purpose?

I actually use categories fairly infrequently, but I use keywords a *ton*, and they can be entered very quickly with no mouse at all. Ctrl-K (or your favorite custom shortcut) to go to the keywords box, then type away. The keywords box has autocomplete, so usually you just need to type a few letters and fills in the rest of your keywords, making it both very quick but also reasonably "controlled" from the persepctive of making sure you use keywords consistently. And keywords have the advantage of being universally understood by almost all photo-related applications, if you store them in standard places like the IPTC Keywords field (which is why I said that the batch facilities of Pro 3 to copy keywords from the database to IPTC is crucial).

For more on organizing with ACDSee Pro, see my series of blog articles on blog.acdsee.com (search for my name, or the keyword DAM). it was written for Pro 2, and I guess at some point I'll need to update it for Pro 3, but it should give you some good ideas.

Great to see his return, and I hope return of development for the Mac version of Canvas. Even if all you guys do is bug fixes and make it compatible with the latest Mac OS and hardware, I'd pay for it! Better yet would be more of the great ideas that have made Canvas for Mac the best graphics tool on the planet.

I moved a few files around into other folders using ACDSee. I was going to print and found no print option so I went back into Iphoto 8.1 and while the thumbs show fine, if I click on to view or edit or print no photo shows only a gray box with an exclamation mark in Iphoto. I'd like to give up Iphoto but if ACDSee does not print or have an edit function I'll have to wait. Thanks, Bill

I presently have ACDSee 2.5. My license code is:
D2QDVH-3348T-3RZVDH-3KMF75G. My order no. was 3301248511 and the order
date was Apr 2, 2008. I am wanting to purchase ACDSee
Pro 3. but have run into difficulty in doing so. This evening, I
received my password by email from you which I copied and pasted in the
correct place as was directed. When I placed my order, a screen came up
that says: "The password you entered does not match the password stored
in Windows for the username". "Do you want to change the password stored
in Windows to your new entry"? I have done everything you requested to
no avail. Since this password is not working, I am unable to get the
promotional code, and would appreciate having the discount price since I
presently own the Pro 2.5 version. Can you help me??

Thanks Heidi.

My ACDSee2009 is working ok on E:. No recent problems. I don't have a "C: drive. Somehow when I upgraded my Mother bd a couple of years ago and resulted in a different Array manager (now Intel v. ASUS), my drive letter got changed. I'm not sure of the impact if I try to change the letter from E: to C:.... Any thoughts on that?
