One possible explanation is that the “View by” settings is set to import only JPEG and not RAW and the dialogue set to “View selected”.

1. First ensure that the dialogue box is set to “View all”.
2. Then chose “View by: File Type” and ensure that both JPEG and RAW format are checked.

Hope this help.

I just bought a Mk4 and am very disappointed to find there is no RAW support for the camera. It's been out since Oct/Nov '09, that's 5 months or so. Should be more than enough time considering this is meant to be pro software and the IV is a pro camera. So what do I do in the meantime...at least Lightroom supports it, but I can't manage my image files with LR.

Come on!

hi,

I try to import RAW pictures from my canon 350d camera into ACDSEE pro 3 in windows 7 OS,

it shows me only my jpg photos and not the RAW. When importing through windows i get ALL my files imported.

I have installed the newest updates of ACDSEE, does anyone know what is the problem?

Ah, I see what you mean. You can’t do it on RAW files. I always export to TIFF first then I do the Resize. That’s why I spend so much time advocating for a new and more comprehensive Batch Export tool.

It could be built around the existing Export dialog but should be improved and meade accessible as a Batch command. I want better control of the output result:

Control of 24/48 bit output.

Improved color profile management. There should also be a “Preserve color profile” option added.

The sizing options are limited and strange. Instead it should work like in the Batch Resize tool (with “Preserve original aspect ratio” and everything there)…

Destination option should also include “Place in source folder” and “Create and place in subfolder”.

File naming should also offer a suffix setting.

In the case a file already exist the option overwrite should be added.

And all these settings should of cause be saveable in the presets.

I don’t think this would be a hard thing to do. All this are already available in other tools so all the technique are already developed and available for the developers. They only need to stich it all together in one nice little batch tool.

The only two or three things that they would have to work a little more on is:

The “Preserve color profile” option. This one is already accessible in the file save/export module in batch edit. But it does not work for color profiles set in the develop settings. But I guess it wouldn’t be too hard to fix that.

I don’t know if they have a suffix option in any module or dialog yet. But that wouldn’t much of a problem to fix.

I haven’t found any option to control 24/48 bit output but as ACDSee already can create both (Batch Convert File Format and Export creates 48 bit TIFF and Batch Edit saves 24 bit TIFF) that can’t be too hard to fix either.

I can't make this work either in Manage OR in View, Dand. For example, I'm in Manage, with an image selected—or a couple of images selected (I've tried it both ways). I go to Tools > Batch > and the submenu pops out, but "Resize" is grayed out/inactive. Same thing in View mode. And the Cntl-R shortcut doesn't work for me either. Very frustrating. What am I doing wrong? Does not seem to me that this should be this hard.

As an update to this topic, here's something else that's currently broken in ACDSee for me (and probably others):

ACDSee doesn't see my Canon SD750 so I can't import photos from it directly into ACDSee. I have tried both as a Device and as a Drive, it appears in neither and, as I've stated above, WIA is a non-starter with ACDSee. The camera is autodetected by Windows and is correctly shown as a Canon SD750 under Win 7's Devices view. Any other application works just fine with this device. This is consistent with not seeing my mobile device. In fact, I don't know of a single device I own that ACDSee actually will detect/see. Since I'm using Windows 7 on my primary computer now, reporting these kinds of things to support will only trigger the unsupported OS response. We need a way to reach the developers so that they can look into these things.

As Dand mentioned in his post re: Color Profile, I have similar situation with over saturated Images once Pro 3 finishes opening the Raw file. I have Color Management turned ON. Once the RAW file is completely loaded, I go to Color Profile under the Develop Tab, check 'Use working space color profile', and then choose which profile to use (RGB in my case). This eliminates a lot of the Saturation. What ever is left, I created a preset to eliminate.

Sure would be nice if Pro 3 let folks set their own starting parameters and loaded them at start up rather than doing this Pre-Set routine.

Yep. Can’t agree more… I can do just that in the Batch Resize by setting size in pixels both height and width to the same value and checking Preserve original aspect ratio and Fit within to Width and height. I usually do it this way in options I set either Remove/replace original files or send the resized images to a specified folder.

Dand,

After trying to follow your suggestion here, I realized I don't understand exactly what you are referring to. I assume you are in Manage or View mode, and are going to Tools > Modify > Batch Edit... Is that right? I think it must be. But when I open that dialog and click Resize in the Operations list on the left and "Resize by Pixel Dimensions" at the top, I am unable to specify both a height and a width. It's one or the other but not both. How are you able to specify both?

Will

Yes, I’m in Manage mode. But no I don’t batch edit I go directly to Tools > Batch > Resize (or use the shortcut Ctrl+R)…

Attached Image:

And, It works in View mode too. There you have to right click to get access to the Batch menu… Or just – simply - use the shortcut Ctrl+R.

Regarding batch edit's resize option - it's simple pixel math,

I guess that would work as long as the originals are equal in size. But if you have originals that differ in size using percent isn’t much help if you need a specific file size (same size in pixels for longest side).

Again, I don't see what you are describing, so I can't help but wonder if something else is going on. Even when visiting a large folder for the first time, I can enter process mode immediately (while it's still indexing the folder / generating thumbs).

Of course, ACDSee does run faster once it has finished its indexing ' thumbnail generation. But FWIW, you can abort the indexing process by clicking the status indicator at any time. You can also set ACDsee not to generate high quality thumbs or to harvest EXIF and IPTC info from files in the first place, via tools-options. In regular use, you'd have all your thumbs already built and wouldn't normally run into situations like this.

Actually, it's worse than that. Sometimes the little icons don't show up even when there is db info. Not sure why. But I found I can get them back by hiding and then restoring the filmstrip via F7. BTW, another symptom of this bug seems to that the menu at the top of the control panel in develop mode also disappears at times.

When the icons are there, its a very quick way to access properties, and you can also access ratings and the tag directly without opening the properties panel.

Regarding batch edit's resize option - it's simple pixel math, no jpeg compression in the equation. That is, you are resizing by MP, not MB.

Regarding rename - while it's not ideal, you should be able to do what you want in a *slightly* easier way. First, while you can't run the search/replace during import (sure wish you could!), you can run a template, so you can have the date/time prepended automatically on import. Then you just need to take care of the space and K20D in two batch rename operations. You could *almost* do it all in one batch rename by using #### in your templat and the autodetect start number option, but that would end up reassigning numbers sequentially, which I think would be a drag. And another bug (!) in ACDSee means the template you create doesn't always get remembered by default.

If it weren't for needing that dash, it would be much easier.

My dear I do appreciate your response. But I have Win7 64 bit system if you had read my posts above and your 2009 does not support this. If you would have read all my posts you would have caught that. So many times Melanie, another moderator, has told folks on this forum the reason they were having so many problems was due to the fact 2009 does not support Win7. Another thing is the pre sales for 12 are poorly handled and I have little confidence in it since not much real info online about it and no sales people to talk to. I also think you didn't read my posts carefully since I have stated I was a newbie to this and your response is well above my level of understanding. I did get some of it but I do think you are used to talking to those in the know and not sure if you are really suited to answering my questions in a newbie way. I appreciate your efforts.

Sorry to hear about that! The thumbs are in your db folder, wherever that is. See tools-options-database. But they aren't a bunch of small files - it's a couple of very large files in some format that somehow contains all the individual thumbs. I have no idea if it would be possible to export them. If nothing else, I'd try at least moving the thumbnail size slider in the main window as large as possible to see what you have, and as you encounter files for which you find this worth the effort, take screen shots with the print screen key then paste into an editor like MS Paint and save (not sure if Paint lets you control the JPEG quality, so it might be better to use a lossless format like PNG).

I would guess that when you copied those files to your local disc, they were marked as read only, and you'd have to make them writable. Actually the whole folder containing the file has to be writable, and it shouldn't be excluded from the db, either.

What do you mean by a "map" in the above? A folder? I've never seen the problems you describe, nor have I seen many others describe anything similar, so I assume this problem must be pretty rare. Can you describe in more specific what you are doing? Is any of reproducible? Have you tried contacting support to let them know about your problems?

Moving an image from one folder to another should definitely move the Originals too, and for me it does, so i can only guess something has gone very wrong on your system. You might consider uninstalling and reinstalling.

Hello Heidi,

Thank you for your reaction. But my conclusion is: it's ACDSee and not me! To my opinion, it makes ACDSee not the most easy and reliable tool to handle files. But if you use another program to move files, the database of ACDSee is losing the relation with the files. Are you connected with ACDSee developers and do they recognise this as a problem? Are they working on it?

Kind regards,

The key you are looking for is an organizer that writes the information you want to organize to your image jpg file. This information is stored in the metadata of the JPG -- EXIF & IPTC. So your "tags" (this is who is in the photo) will be written to the IPTC keywords field. Any information about the photo can be added as a caption into the IPTC caption field. The date of a photo is stored in the EXIF fields in the metadata. Once the data is stored in these fields, most organizers will be able to read/display this information. The universal standard way to store image info.

ACDSee 2009 lets you do the above one image at time:

To assign keyword (tag of who is in it) and caption: Choose a photo, go View | Properties, and click on the IPTC tab. You enter in the caption and assign keywords.

To change the date (this can be done in batch), choose a photo, go to Tools | Adjust time image stamp and make sure you adjust the EXIF date.

In ACDSee Pro 3,

For keywords and captions, you can do it the same way one at a time. But you can also do this for more than one image in by using the Database tab and putting in the caption and keywords. (Really storing this in ACDSee's database.) Then you Batch Set Info to write all this information to the proper fields in the image. (This writes the stuff in ACDSee database to the IPTC fields.)

To change the data, choose photo, go to Batch | Adjust time stamp.

So no matter what organizer you choose, you want to verify this information that you took the time to organize is stored in the metadata of the jpg files. One of the tools that many of us use to verify that this information is stored in the file itself is to IfranView (http://www.irfanview.com/) Its a simple viewer, when open an image, click on Image | Info and verify that you see your information in these fields: IPTC: keywords and caption and EXIF : datetimeoriginal.

Hello Sam and I can't thank you enough for sending me in the right direction.

The link you gave me didn't work but I tracked it down just the same.

Before I did that I had emailed Melanie Wood and no response after three days.http://community.acdsee.com/home/2010/03/preorder-and-save-on-acdsee-photo-manager-12/#comment-722

I then called 1-888-359-8449 and tried to talk to sales to find out more about the preorder of ACDSEE 12 and all I got was a call center who takes orders and knows nothing about the product! All they could do is refer me to the website. Wow. That was a close call I almost ordered this software!

After reading the countless posts of dissatisfied customers with Win7 which I have and a new high end HP there is no way the previous version would work effectively with it and there is really no telling when the new version comes out and whether it will be without countless bugs. So many other software companies have been able to catch up but ACDSEE is still trending water.

The responses Melanie kept giving to folks about the win 7 incapatibility questions were almost sad in a way. I bet it is not her fault but it is her job to respond. Insult after insult. I hope they pay her well. I now can see why she never responded to my post to her. Maybe she quit. What an awful position management put everyone in.

I am definately going back to PSE 8.0 unless someone can recommend something better.

I am newbie and really don't know enough to ask the right quesions. You are right I will have a long go of it when scanning. I am housewife with kids grown and lots of time to widdle away at this project. I just wanted a easy good way to organize and tag them. I am thinking that if I do an excellent scan at the highest Dpi and make a copy of all pictures that some relative down the road in the future will be able to clean up the scans much more effectively than I can with better software. I just want to make a good archive for the future. I wanted to make copy before negatives deteriorate any further since some negatives/slides/pictures go back around the early 1900's.

Then make another copy and do simple clean up taking out red eyes and dust and scratches, but no cropping and give each daughter a copy to enjoy now.

I wanted to be able not only to tag but to attach more information than maybe tag would allow. Date, where it was, who was in the picture and what they were doing. Maybe I can get all that into a tag in short hand tag. That way I could pull up pictures easily and put them in folders based on the tag info. This might be ass back wards to experts but this is my linear thinking on this. Maybe someone in the future can take untouched photos and overwrite them to my tags of my touched up version. This is getting complicated.

For a company that specialized in this type of software for so long and for them to have literally missed the boat on this newest upgrade is an indication to me that something is seriously wrong and to invest in it would be risky.
