I'm getting a new computer with Windows 7. Does anyone know if I'll be able to run ACDSee 10 Photo Manager on Windows 7 OS? If yes, how do I transfer my Database from XP to Windows 7 and get it to recognize all my tags, etc.?

It's a good thought. I've just had a look around, doing some tests and I don't think I have the extra info backup up elsewhere. The default database is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\ACD Systems\Catalogs\100\Default which I don't backup.

I changed the ratings on a random file and it appeared to update Asset.dbf in the database folder. I tried looking at this file in a text editor but it didn't help. Anyone know if there is a database viewer I could use to look at this file? The file is over 5MB in size so there is something in it!

I also noticed that in the Organize pane, my original catalogs have been restored, eg Places->RTW->Thailand. Unfortunately no photos are linked to these.

It does seem that the info I want is stored somewhere but it doesn't like my new configuration. I can keep hoping!

I'm trying to get the same info for possible migration from PE 5. The Tags are indeed in the IPTC Keywords field so at least they can be found. Any notion of hierarchy is lost however. I check with Customer Support - there is no document that assists with the steps for this migration. This would be a great asset for those of us that are tired of having to upgrade PE every 6mos.

Is it possible you had been running incremental backups, and most of the backed up info is in a different backup? Not really sure how all that works, as I've never actually tried restoring from a db backup that I can recall. But worth experimenting with - it's possible the info you thought you backed up *is* backed up, just under a different name.

Thanks Marc. Image Well looks like it is showing only the photos I've looked at recently, certainly not all the ones I thought were in the database. Next time I'll be better at checking what's in the backup before I reinstall.

It looks like I need to think about upgrading. I like the idea of storing the extra info into the image files themselves.

Hmm. Sounds like you're doing the right things, so I don't know why it isn't working. I guess the next step would be to try to determine if the backup contained any useful info at all. If you click Image Well, does it display thumbs for all your images? Or perhaps only the ones you've actually visited since the restore?

As for what else you could do in the future to preserve things, that version doesn't have as many options in this respect as some other versions do. The most recent versions allow db info to be embedded into XMP fields within the image files themselves, and the Pro versions also allow info to be embedded into standard IPTC fields. But exporting db info to a text file is something I often like to do before any major system changes - click Image Well to display all your cataloged files, select all images, run database->export and select the option to include all db info for selected files. Then you can inspect the file before doing the OS upgrade or whatever to make sure you have what you think you have.

I have just reinstalled my computer with Windows XP. I backed up my ACDSee database to preserve the ratings and categories I had set on some photos.

Doing a restore of the database hasn't brought back this extra data. I have had a look under Database Maintenance and it looks like the files have mapped correctly, ie there are no orphans.

I looked in the ACDSee.bkup file and it doesn't list the folder where my photos were store. Is this normal?

Is there a way to check what files have been indexed in the database?

I really want to get the ratings back as it would take ages rating these again. Should I have done something else to preserve my ratings?

I liked Picaview when I bought it years ago and then I bought ACDSee 32 and fell in love with that. I upgraded a couple of times and finally bought v3.0. I absolutely hated 3.0 so I reinstalled v 2.42 and have been happily humming along with that until now. I had to replace my PC this week and I had my copy of v2.42 but can't find the email from so many years ago with the registration code. Now I look here and can't even figure out what product is equivalent and, since I couldn't stand all the bells and whistles on ACDSee32 v3.0, I doubt I would want to use a new one anyway. Is there any way I can repurchase v2.40 or 2.42?

Since they see there are great but great people who enjoys the famous PicaView, really that finds it hard to the company ACD System to extract the new one and more complete program Picaview with more pluguin and supports happen for Windows7 & Vista 32 & 64bit.

Indeed nothing finds it hard to do it, if another company goes forward it swear that I change.
I do not enter this forum until a new Picaview does not go out, am employed at design and me it is troublesome that they do not support seriousness in his products.

Here is the trick...

ACDSee thinks the files are in a certain place. To find that place, search for something, right click on the thumbnail and choose go to file. It will report that there are no files in that folder. Right above this is the folder where ACDSee thinks they are.

Now you have 2 options. You can

Move the files back to where ACDSee thinks they are using windows explorer. This is usually the most sure fire way although the most brute force method.

Use change binding. I have lost all my database information after I moved folders using an application other than ACDSee?
