Great to see his return, and I hope return of development for the Mac version of Canvas. Even if all you guys do is bug fixes and make it compatible with the latest Mac OS and hardware, I'd pay for it! Better yet would be more of the great ideas that have made Canvas for Mac the best graphics tool on the planet.

Hi Morphix:

I use Canvas 11 for Windows on a MacBook pro (new). I run it under VMWare Fusion 3.0. I've also tried it under Parallel's Desktop version 5.0.

Both run FASTER than the Mac version X which was designed for older PowerPC Macs.

Both Fusion and Parallel's provide a mode where you just see your Canvas application and not the Windows interface. Both can mirror your documents and desktop folders on your mac to make your experience almost seamless between the two OSs.

I prefer to run Canvas 11 under Windows XP on my Mac. I also have Windows 7 but DON'T see ANY value using Windows 7. Either way, 1 gig of ram for the Windows OS is all you'll need to allocate. FWIW, my MacBook pro has 4 gig total.

If you have any questions about how to do it, I'd be happy to help!

When moving to a new Mac you are supposed to use the Migration operation. When you first start the new one, it will ask if you have an old Mac and explain how to transfer everything. You plug in the old computer to the new one using a Firewire cable, then turn on the old while holding the T key, which will put it in Target Firewire mode (the Firewire symbol).

The migration can be done after the fact, but if I'm not mistaken, it will create a new account, I think. In the Finder, choose to the Help menu, then type in migration and follow those instructions.

First launch Disk Utility in your utilities folder, in the Applications folder, click the hard drive in the left column, then click Repair Disk Permissions. If that does not help, then do this Canvas reset I posted a long time ago, which will fix crashing when saving, improve slow speed and other problems:

1. Open Canvas and make a note of any custom settings you've made; position of palettes, document settings, etc.

2. Go to Configuration Center and choose Personality Manager, no need to choose anything, but you can if you want, click OK. A message will come up, click OK. This will reset Canvas to a clean install.

3. Quit Canvas, then re-launch it. It will act like it was installed for the first time. Go through the start up windows, then restore your custom settings.

4. Quit Canvas to lock in your settings.

Tips to keep Canvas running well;

Never choose a document from the File menu or the Open command, this is what causes Canvas to crash during saves. Put important documents on the Dock or sidebar of the Finder window, or go directly to a document with the Finder and double click it.

In Configuration Center, click Color Calibration, then in Mode, choose Canvas CMS. If you do choose Kodak, then down in Preview, leave it None, any other choice will slow Canvas to a crawl.

Do not use the View Fonts choice in the Text>Font menu. This will make Canvas unstable and crash. Also, if you use the Type palette, close it as soon as you make your choices (a bit more work, but prevents crashes).

After printing 2-3 times, the keyboard is not recognized in the Print window, and command keys are lost, just Quit Canvas and relaunch.

Choose Save As... and in that window, uncheck Use Compression, then Cancel the window. This will make Saves very fast.

While using Canvas, Quit any programs you are not using, helps with RAM allotment. Also, install as much RAM as you can afford.

NOTE: Even with these suggestions, Canvas will get unstable over time, so doing this reset will be necessary regularly. Other users have found that upgrading to Snow Leopard OS 10.6 fixes many of these problems.
