Hi Ics0500,

I was puzzled by this too.
You have to be Online during the first installation of Canvas 11.
The installation procedure seems to connect to the ACD server and downloads the installation file (or a verification).
That is meant by "source". It should install rather smoothly if and when you are online.
After that, you will find the insatllation files somewhere in your user folder under "downloaded files".
Should you ever be in need to re-install, that file will work without being online during the installation routine.

I've been using Canvas since version 5 and love it but the July update just will not install. I've downloaded it 3 different times to insure that the file isn't corrupted and always get the same result. The install decides that the "...installation source is not available" when the process was started by clicking on the install source.

What's going on?

MS does not map Magenta (or any other color) to be transparent. The referenced MSDN link recommends purchasing/using an icon drawing tool called GMG (http://www.gamani.com/foricons) to create icons and to designate the transparency color.

Obviously, I could buy another drawing tool to do this job, but after dishing out several $100s for Canvas, I would prefer to use it for this task.

Now I remember... magenta was the color used for transparency for toolbar icons in dll files (at least it was years ago). Sorry about misleading you on that point.

Have you tried any freeware apps? I personally can't recommend any as I haven't tried any. A web search pointed me to one called IcoFX. If icons with transparency was my objective, I'd probably give it a try... but that's me :D

I find it convenient often just to change the line stroke of the arrow to increase arrowhead size. This will increase the thickness of the line defining the arrowhead, so it has larger impact for the arrowheads increasing in all directions, than for the line which is only increasing as one single line.

Been awhile since I made any icon files, but as I recall, the transparency is mapped to a [background] color. I used—I believe MS mostly does too—magenta (R255 G0 B255). Yet I understand that other colors can be used.

I'm working through the getting started tutorials in the manual - just finished a flow chart. As I move the selection tool arrow around little yellow squares pop up in odd places. They look very useful and important but what are they? Advanced features I'll meet a hundred pages from now? Something I missed ten pages ago?

Just to be clear, they are not the bounding box handles or the various icons that the tool icons turn into. They often pop up near/on an object close to an object I'm about to work on.

Thanks in advance

I know of no way that preserves the georeferencing.

If I have finished my map I just select all and rotate to suit.
If I think I'll need to add stuff later I make a copy of the job and use that to import into then copy and paste to the rotated drawing including something I can index it to once copied over.
Obviously set scale is an issue to in this.

The real draw back is the export function is useless as it isn't correctly referenced.

Its something that should be included as an (obvious) option.

Firstly, what is the difference between saving a SWF as "for players" vs. "for editors"?

Secondly, I have a map project that I'm moving to Flash. In order to do so, I'm decompiling the SWF that Canvas outputs so that I can edit it in Flash. The resulting file looks great - I make my movie clips and build.

However, some of the shapes in the resulting SWF are distorted. You don't see the distortions in Flash itself, only when the SWF is built and I zoom in (which I will need to do - thus the usefulnesss of being in vectors). I also see no distortions from the decompiled SWF - its only after I've converted the shapes to MovieClips. The distortion I'm seeing is sort of a slight horizontal skew to the left by about 6 degrees.

Has anyone run into anything like this? Is it a bug?

Any other thoughts on doing what I'm trying to do? Perhaps some other software that can easily convert shapefiles to Flash?
