!

For one thing, being a moderator doesn't require knowledge of the product - it requires knowledge of the forum, and tact in dealing with people who can occasionally become offensive. But FWIW, if there is something you think is clear that I said I didn't understand, I do hope you will help out by explaining. That's what these forums are for - users (such as myself) helping each other out. I think you are confusing being forum moderator - just a volunteer "position" shared by several other users who have an interest in helping out here in the user forums - with someone who actually works for ACD, perhaps in "customer support". Moderators do not work for ACD, nor as are customer support. We're just here to keep the user forums running smoothly.

You are correct, Marc, and please believe me I do understand the role of moderators in forums and I apologize for being so dogmatic in my statements and implying you could fix or change things. I hope you will accept my apologies for expressing frustrations (which is really the problem) by directing them at you.

You score well on the tact scale, and I need to go back and read some of my own sermons about that in other forums!

Having had considerable technical problems in getting the download to work did not help my frame of mind.

After considering the situation more calmly, IMHO much of the frustration, including my own, can be traced to the magnitude of the changes that have been implemented, while not retaining some features (like icons and toolbars) that had become conerstones of many peoples way of working. (Which is not always necessarily logical to others and not always the most efficient way to do things but it happens to be "their" way).

It was the radicalness of the change in user interface that initially frustrated me as ACDSee has been an essential element of working with images on a daily basis. As someone that not only embraced digital imaging in its infancy, but became almost manic about it, I realized early on that the massive number of images I was generating created a need for some way to easily browse, if not "manage" them. In a way, I have grown with ACDSee and actually rarely even find it necessary to use my other image editors for all but the most difficult editing tasks.

I will conclue my "mea culpa" by simply saying that I still think that it would have been helpful for the company to have kept the ability to switch to a more "classic" mode for users that prefered that even if it might not be logical to others.

I hope that clarifies my comments.

That answers my question almost. I installed my good old PhotoManager 9 on Win7 64 bit today and restored my images and database. Errors frequently popping up so I was thinking about buying the 2009 version. Cancelled that thought after reading this.

Would be nice to get a date for a Win 7 (64 bit) compatible version. Im not quite ready to wait long....

Im googling for other alternatives. Any good ideas?

After the last step the photos are in 3 versions for use on the server.

This photos my family use for different use and they make some changes but it's not necesary to keep a previus version.

If they like an previous version I create it new from the original RAW file.

I wonder if the difference in startup time relates to the folder yoi are starting up in, or the size or state of the database you are using? Anyhow, not much else I can say about that except it's the other way around for me.

But I'll be curious to see what you are referring to with crop. One of the major advantages of the new Develop mode in pro 3 is that, for example, you don't need to ever hit Save. And that you can easily copy settings from image to image, and other do operations in batches, and easily move directly from image to image while in Develop mode, allowing you to save *enormous* amounts of time when dealing with large numbers of images.

Hi Marc!

Up to the users workflow it is necesary or not to create Original and Develop folders!

In my workflow are the Original and Develop folders not necesary.

My camera is a Nikon and I use only the RAW (.nef) files.

First I download the Photos with the Nikon Transfer, this make a backup from my RAW's too.

Next step is to rename the Photos with ACDSee Pro.

Next step is edit the RAW's with Nikon Capture NX2.

The Last step is a batch convert in JPG Full size Adobe RGB, 1200pix sRGB, 600pix sRGB.

OK, but if you follow those steps, you shouldn't be getting any Originals or Developed folders at all. Are you saying you *are* getting thse? Do you know at what point they start appearing? The new folders should only appear if you actually use the features that require them. So that's why I am confused.

The beneift here is non-destructive editing, which is a fundamentally huge improvement over older metholodogies. By offering this, ACDSee Pro 3 can probably probably cut down by something like a factor of 10 the amount of time it takes to process large numbers of files. Pro 2.5 might seem faster because you're used to it, but once yu learn to use the powerful new tools in Pro 3, you will find it is *many* time faster at processing large numbers of files.

As for the "countless" others like Lightroom that offer an integrated cataloging and non-destructive image procesisng for PC, I can count them on the fingers of one hand. It's really Lightroom, Lightzone, and maybe Bibble 5 if they ever get a product out the door. Picasa too if you're willing to consider programs that offer these features in only very limited ways.

And while Lightroom might be a fairly large application, it's still retty streamline compared to Photoshop- and ACDSee is more streamlined still.

As for what differentiates ACDsee form the small number of other programs that offer integrated cataloging and non-destructive editing, I'd say the main one is that it offers what most would consider a more streamlined cataloging interface. It also offers a traditional Edit mode which some of the others don't. And it has what i'd consider best basic UI of the bunch - simple things like double clicking to see a fully functional full screen view, a customizable keystroke of your choice to go to Develop mode, etc. As for the non-destructive editing facility itself, the programs I mentioned are all pretty similar (although Picasa is more "toy" in comparison), with each offering some feature that it does better than the others. ACDSee's major selling point feature in that area is probably the Advanced Lighting tool.

If you browse these forums you'll find a few others trheads from people with similar problems. Most if not all were connected to situations where people were relocating their Windows "Pictures" folder ("My Pictures" on XP) and using that as their startup folder. The problem should goes away if you don't use that relocation feature, or don't have ACDSee startup in that relocated folder. Others have found other workarounds. I personally have ACDSee start in a different folder - the place I import pictures to initially, before processing them and then copying the results to Pictures (the originals then get moved to an external hard drive).

Assuming the pictures look OK in another program, you might try going back to acdsee and checking database->quarantine files. Sometimes acdsee has a temporary problem with a file (happened to run ran out of memory at that particular moment, etc), so acdsee quarantines it and refuses to even look at that file again. This produces exactly the symptoms you are seeing, and removing the files form quarantine would set things right again.

I agree. I'd assume that a JPEG is already being sharpened to an appropriate degree. Additional sharpening would be needed only on resizing an image, but the amount and type is completely subjective. Sharpning adds artifacts, and different people have different feelings about the tradeoffs. So the best advice is, play with the settings yourself to see what balance between additional sharpness (good) and artificats such as halos (bad) appeals works for you. the only really concrete thing I can suggest is that is important to perform sharpening while viewing an image at the actual size it will be viewed/printed, or else you might get a skewed notion of how much sharpening is needed, and how much you are actually applying.

Marc we get that you don't understand it, but your responses, and position with ACDSee (yes position, moderator, not paid, but you have a position with them as they had to give you this moderator status) makes your responses appear as 'official' and that is something you DO need to understand, whether you agree with the perception or not, it exists.

You are absolutely right; I do need to be more clear about this, since I can see how people might get the impression that I am representing ACD. I will try to be more careful about this.

Tinami was expressing a concern over a missing feature that has been there all along apparently, and is important to him. It shouldn't matter that YOU dont understand why it's important to him.

As John suggests, it *does* matter, because it is entirely possible he was simply misunderstanding how the interface works, and that he can indeed get what he wants (viewing images at "best quality") without this feature. In other words, it is entirely possible - quite likely, in fact - that the problem some of these users are experiencing as a result of the absence of this feature can be solved *without* any change to the product at all. And I cannot see how my offering to help people solve these problems using the existing tools can be seen as anything but a good thing. So if in fact the problem is simply one of the user not understanding how to use the tools as they are to see images at "best quality", then I consider myself to be doing a service here.

If on the other hand there really is some respect in which somehow the lack of auto-resize really does prevent someone from seeing an image at "best quality", that would be important information for ACD to know, As a user of ACDSee myself, when I make an enhancement request, I know it is in my best interest to make sure I am explaining the value of enhancement as clearly as I can. If I cannot successful convey that to my fellow users here, that should serve as a bit of wake-up call to me that perhaps I need to explain better if I wish to convince ACD of the value of my suggestion. So I am simply offering that same friendly advice to those requesting this feature. They are, of course, free to ignore my advice.

I think gurm42 does do a great job of explaining a 8different* respect - one completely unrelated to the original complaint about being unable to see images at "best quality" - in which auto-resize can be useful. It makes clear that the value of the enhancement has to do with how ACDSee's window interacts with other open application windows. Knowing the value of the enhancement helps a company prioritize it.

Thanks Brett & John for your comments; I think you've summed up where I'm coming from well.

And thank you Gurm42 for your clear description of how you use the program and why the feature would be important to you in that type of workflow. I think you're right - ACDSee is basically assuming that when you are working on your photos, that's this all you are doing, and ACDSee is the only program you will be using for the most part, and you will want the window maximized. It's not much set up for the sort of constant switching back and forth with other applications you seem to be suggesting. And in that light, you're right - it's a missing feature that was probably removed simply because it doesn't work so well with the new interface, in which the viewer is just a mode of the main window rather than a separate window. I'd still recommend submitting an enhancement request, as I'm sure it's not *impossible* to do. But frankly, while sticking with PM2009 or Pro 2.5 might be an OK workaround for now, I suspect at some point, you might find the new features of newer versions worth upgrading to, so it might make sense to tr to find a way to working more effectively with the maximized window. I know I'm a huge user of alt-tab to switch between windows; I have virtually all my applications maximized (except the occasional Explorer window).

But in any case, what you are describing is still different from what I was asking for clarification on. The initial posts suggested they needed the auto-resize feature in order to see image at "best quality", which simply isn't true. So I'm guessing they were simply misunderstanding something about how ACDSee works, and how it is indeed completely possible to see images at "best quality" without this feature. As John suggests, I'm asking for more clarification so I can suggest how you can get "best quality" without auto-resize, which has nothing to do with image quality.

For me is the ACDSee Pro 3.0 a small Editor and a fast picture Viewer.

So you see every user has a differnt workflow.

Best regards, Thorsten :-)

There are probably a number of problems that could cause this behavior; there' no way to no right now which you might be seeing. But the standard advice I have is to first try taking all files out of the folder ACDSee is trying to startup in, to see if some file there is causing the problem, and also try renaming ACDSee's default catalog (browse your AppData folder to find it) to see if making ACDSDee start with an empty db works around the startup problem. Chances are, though, you'll need to contact customer support (link at top left of this page).

I'd agree that the crop operation feels a bit on the sluggish side compared to other operations on my very average laptop (Core 2 / T5500, 2GB RAW). But still, it rarely takes more than about three seconds before I can begin cropping a 10MP RAW file. And all on-screen operatins are virtually instant.

As for dragging down in the lighting tool, you need to right click to darken - are you doing that? I actually rarely use that method, doing my adjustments on the graph directly. But I really should be using the image, as I end up wasting time trying to find the right area of the graph to drag to get the effect I want.

Hi Brett:

Yes, it certainly looks as though you must choose either "Develop" or "Edit" and use the tools that are there. I see there is plenty of overlap -- so much so that one wonders why there is a distinction at all between "Develop" and "Edit".

I think the distinction mostly because of the few things that Edit mode can do that would have been too difficult to implement in the non-destructive Develop mode. Mostly, the operations on selections, including the use of the selection tool, but also things like heal & clone and red-eye fixes. It's not impossible to implement this sort of thing in a non-destructive editor (Lightroom does it, at leas in some ways, and it looks like Bibble 5 will too if they ever actually get the product out), but it's harder. I'm hoping the do that for the next release so Edit mode can go away. But for now, that's the basic distinction - global changes can and should be done in Develop, but any local changes need to be done in Edit.

The expectation is that most people can do most of what they want in Develop mode, and you should go there first unless there is a specific reason to need a different workflow. Do as much as you can in Develop, then if you find there is something you need Edit for (like a clone operation), switch to Edit, knowing that you are going down a one-way street at that point, as it's impossible to still offer the same ability to revisit your Develop changes after the file has been through Edit.

The alternative some prefer is to do there Edit mode stuff *first*, doing a Save as to create a fresh copy with those changes that you can take into Develop mode. This would be more palatable if not for a few quirks in how Save As currently works, but it *is* an option.

You can customize these and most commands via view->toolbars->customize->keyboard. I hate three-character sequences, and prefer just one for the things I use a lot like this. However, "E" appears to be at least partially hardwired to toggle exposure warnings while in View mode. I have my "E" key customized to go directly to edit, but if I'm View mode, it first toggles the exposure warnings, and then if I hold it long enough, it eventually sends me to Edit mode. I'm too old and set in my ways to change to a different shortcut, so I live with this. That's also why I use "R" instead of "D" for Develop - because "R" was what I used for RAW Processing in previous versions, and that's basically what turned into Develop mode.

BTW, there are actually separate shortcuts - both sets customized in the same manner, but totally separately - for Manage versus View mode. So you can, if you wish, have the same key do something different depending on what mode you are in. But if you want it to do the same in both modes, you have to customize it separately in both modes.

I find switching tabs and most other operations also faster in the product version than the betas. Unfortunately, while the product versions might be a bit faster than beta 2 at generating the Developed previews after modifying an image, it still makes you wait for it to do so before moving on to the next image. So if you've made changes to an image in Develop mode and wish to move on to another image, you have to wait for ACDSee finish "Applying changes" before it loads the next image. This is practically instant with JPEG's, and fast enough with sufficiently small RAW files. But the bigger the image, the longer it takes, and images from my 10MP camera can take 5 seconds or more. Just long enough to be a bit frustrating, although it also encourages me to get things "right" before moving on, rather than flitting about as randomly as I used to. Everyone has their list of pet peeves with any application, this is mine with Pro 3.

Also agree with emem, no way is this version 3 faster than 2.5 (lets not forget speed of use was ACDSee's USP). The program takes longer to open and is positively sluggish (almost as tardy as an Adobe app) on my 4 year old PC. To do simple edits on individual photos is now a time consuming cumbersome task

I find 3.0 loads *much* faster on my system than 2.5 did (probably 5 times faster or so). As for edits, can you describe which specific editing tasks you are finding sluggish? I used 2.5 quite extensively, and find 3.0 to be *huge* improvement in all all respects.

I have just done some rather unscientific speed tests with the two applications, ACDSee 3 is on a pc with a 3.2GHZ P4 and version 2.5 pro is on a Prescott 3.4ghz pc.

Time taken for app to load from clicking icon:

2.5 Pro = 3.73 secs

3 pro = 9 secs

Time taken to do an identical crop on the same image and save:

2.5 Pro = 6 secs

3 Pro = 16 sec

I'll try and do a video screen cap to illustrate these times and upload on youtube.

Sorry, I have no idea why you are seeing these problems. If you post your support ticket number (or send it to me privately), I'll bug someone at ACD to see what happened to it. It is not normal or right for tickets to go unacknowledged for that long.

stragr said:

Yes this is something very important. After every change , in every folder , one "Original" folder is created. If in one day we use 100-200 folders why shall we must have 100-200 new empty folders. The PRO version should have think to have the possibility to disable 100 of creation this folder or delete it automatically.

I don't understand. Those folders shouldn't be empty - they are only created when actually editing your files. And in that case, they aren't empty - they contain the original version of your files. This is absolutely necessary in order to implement the non-destructive editing capabilities that are the whole reason for the existence of Pro 3 - you cannot have non-destructive editing without the saving of originals.

So while I agree if you wish don't wish to take advantage of the most powerful new feature in this - or perhaps *any* - version of ACDSee, it should be possible to turn it off, and I hope they add this. But I think people asking for this should try actually using and taking advantage of nondestructive editing before asking for an option that would prevent them from using this incredible new feature. It is a whole new new world of editing, and once you experience it, I doubt you'd ever want to go back. Any more than you'd want to go back to the days of computers before graphical user interfaces (eg, when everything was done from the DOS command line), or to the days of punch cards. It's that revolutionary a step forward.
